Pebble Beach Company has hired TGR Design, the design firm of 15-time Major Champion Tiger Woods, to redevelop its iconic nine-hole short course.

The Hay, located on the site of the former Peter Hay Golf Course, reopened for play in April 2021.

It features a dramatically re-designed nine-hole course, the Resort’s first-ever putting course, and a new restaurant and outdoor patio with views over Carmel Bay and Point Lobos.

The Hay aims to attract and engage golfers of all abilities, drawing inspiration from the legacy of its original creator, Peter Hay, the long-time Head Professional at Pebble Beach and Del Monte golf courses.

Peter Hay opened the original nine-hole layout in 1957, creating one of America’s first short courses to introduce newcomers, especially juniors, to the sport.

Tiger’s team have carried on Hay’s legacy, with Pebble Beach Company announcing that juniors aged 12 and under will play the short course for free and all golfers can play the putting course at no cost.

Woods has re-routed the short course holes to celebrate Pebble Beach’s rich history and showcase the incomparably beautiful views of Carmel Bay.

Every detail lends itself to a fun and unforgettable golf experience for families, beginners, juniors and corporate groups.

Tiger’s Changes to ‘The Hay’

Here are some of the most interesting changes Tiger Woods and his team made to Pebble Beach’s nine-hole shorty:

Hole #2: a replica of Pebble Beach Golf Links’ 7th hole, making one of the game’s most iconic holes accessible to more people.

Each of the other eight holes’ yardage corresponds to a significant year in Pebble Beach history, with plaques on each tee telling the story, such as: Hole #4, 47 yards, “Bing”: In 1947, Bing Crosby brought the original Pro-Am tournament to Pebble Beach.

The event is now known as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and is one of the longest-running and most charitable events on the PGA TOUR.

Hole 3 “Watson,” is 82 yards long and immortalises Tom Watson’s famous chip-in at the par three 17th hole in 1982, to narrowly edge Jack Nicklaus and win his first and only U.S. Open title.

Hole #9, 100 yards, “Tiger”: In 2000, Tiger Woods crushed the field, winning by a record-breaking 15 stroke margin, at the 100th U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach.

Pebble Beach Putting Course

The new putting course will rotate regularly through over a dozen different routings. The new restaurant is perched behind the ninth green, just steps away from the Pebble Beach Golf Academy and a short walk to the first tee of Pebble Beach Golf Links.

The course is open for individual play and group events. At time of publication, it costs $75 to play The Hay for the general public and resort guests, with golfers aged 12 and under playing free. Re-rounds can be booked at discounted rates.
