Assoufid named ‘Africa’s Best Golf Course’

Assoufid named ‘Africa’s Best Golf Course’

The paradise island of Mauritius offers luxury golf for less when you stay at Constance Hotels’ Belle Mare Plage Resort

Assoufid Golf Club Marrakech has been named Africa and Morocco’s best golf course by judges at The World Golf Awards 2021.

The 18-hole championship layout enjoys views of North Africa’s snow-capped Atlas Mountains and is part of a 222-hectare resort and private residential development. The 6,420-meters (7,020-yards | par 72) desert-style course opened in 2014 and was the debut design project of PGA Professional and former European Tour player Niall Cameron.

Cameron has mapped out a course that blends seamlessly with the natural landscape and accentuated the epic views of North Africa’s Atlas Mountains to its south.

“I had to pinch myself when I first saw the site for the golf course,” said Cameron.

“The setting, with the views to the mountains, is mesmerizing – you can see why people from all over the world are drawn here.

“The terrain for the golf course was ideal. The palm and olive groves, set on undulating rolls and folds in the landscape, enabled us to incorporate mature trees into the design.

“We also have a creek running through the course, which we have brought into play. It’s a strategic design, prompting the golfer to think about how they tackle each shot.”

The luxury clubhouse has elegant indoor and outdoor terrace seating areas and La Colline restaurant, which offers a variety of exquisite main dishes, salads and drinks served throughout the day.

Golf in Marrakech

Marrakech Golf Club is just 20-minutes from the ancient center of the vibrant ‘Ochre City’ of Marrakech, and a 10-minute drive from the international airport.

Marrakech is Morocco’s fourth largest city and is home to the largest traditional market (souk) in Morocco and one of the busiest squares in Africa and the world, Djemaa el Fna.

Morocco is among the fastest growing golf destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

With recent political and civil unrest in more established North African golfing destinations such as Egypt and Tunisia, Morocco has benefited from a boost in golf tourism from European travelers who appreciate the warm climate and year round sunshine in this region.

Within a three-hour flight time of most European capital cities, Marrakech is a legendary haven for artists, fashionistas, movie stars, business people and statesmen.

While tourists enjoy the sights, sounds and heady aromas of the souks, residents head for discreetly favored restaurants, clubs and shopping.

For those with a taste for the outdoors, skiing, walking and 4×4 driving in the Atlas Mountains is a 90-minute drive away, while the beach is a two-hour trip.
